Does Following Your Bliss Require Quitting Your Job?

After reading my last post, you might think that I am encouraging you to quit your job and go to the beach for the rest of your life. (If you haven’t read it yet, here is the link) And to be honest sitting on the beach with your feet in the warm sand, sipping lemonade through a bendy straw, and reading a book is one of life’s great pleasures. But after a couple weeks of that, wouldn’t you get a little bored? A little stir crazy?

Let me put it this way, if you were forced to just sit on a blanket on the sand, drink lemonade, and read books for the rest of your life, you’d probably get sick of it at some point. You’d probably reach a point when you’d want to visit your friends or family members, take a trip, or share your knowledge with the world in some way.

So there must be some way to follow your bliss within the boundaries of your current life. I really don’t think you need to quit your job today, although you can do that too – whatever you are inspired to do is likely the right step on your own personal journey of life. But even if you do quit your job, you will still have to answer the question of “What should I do next?” Whether you are in a job you love or a job you hate, in a relationship you love or a relationship you are ready to leave, or in a location you love or one you want to move from — you can take action to move away from the things in your life that bug you and drain your energy and add in more of the stuff that lights you up. Over time you will create new habits, new routines, and you will create an entirely different environment and lifestyle for yourself – moving from feeling a sense of dread when you wake up in the morning, to a feeling of delight that lasts all day.

Sometimes you need to get a little wake up call that inspires you to refocus your energies, take a good look at what is really important to you, and get riled up enough to make some big changes. Once you are aware that you want to change something about your life and you take action to make it a reality, you will still be faced with the fact that most changes take time. So while you are on that journey to make your new life a reality, it is critical that you also keep things in perspective.

Perspective means that even if you hate your job, you might choose to suck it up and stick with it to save money for your round the world trip next year. Perspective means that you decide to start your day with yoga and journaling to get you in the right mindset so that you don’t waste your day surfing the net and posting updates on Facebook. Perspective means that you keep your goals and dreams in front of you so you never lose sight of where you want to go.

No matter where you are on your journey, in a painful place, or on the road to joy and fulfillment, you ALWAYS have the power to tune in to what is good in your life – the fact that you are creating your life moment by moment and thought by thought. So keep that in mind and keep dreaming.

Love this, Meghan! My father always said that you don’t get your dream job right off the bat…you have to try several things to come to know yourself and what your true passions are. Each job, each step on the journey takes us to where we ultimately want to be…if we listen and follow. :)

Great post Meghan – from someone who DID quit my “job” to start a business I will say that it’s a HUGE leap of faith – and while it can be done – there may be less stressful ways of crafting your dream life with a step by step plan of action – as long as there is some ACTION going on and not just daydreaming about things being different without really making the choices to change them.
